Escalating tensions between the United States and Iran have driven a significant rally in crude oil prices, nearing the $100-per-barrel mark. The geopolitical uncertainties surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a critical channel for global energy trade, have led traders to factor in a substantial risk premium, despite limited actual supply disruptions.
The recent military exchanges and threats between Washington and Tehran have heightened fears of a broader conflict, potentially impacting oil production and export infrastructure in the Gulf region. Although physical supplies remain largely unaffected, the risk of escalation has prompted traders to price in additional uncertainties, causing crude oil prices to surge.
Global oil supplies are currently stable, but the Persian Gulf's role as a major crude export hub means any threats to shipments from key producers like Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, and the UAE could quickly tighten supplies. Alternative routes exist, but their capacity is limited compared to traditional Gulf channels.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a focal point for global oil markets. While tanker traffic continues, security concerns and isolated attacks have led to occasional disruptions and increased transportation costs. With nearly one-fifth of global oil trade passing through Hormuz, even minor disturbances can cause significant price volatility.
Despite global growth concerns, oil demand remains robust, supported by the US economy and steady demand growth in emerging markets like India and Southeast Asia. China's economic activity is mixed, with slower growth offset by stimulus measures.
Background
The Strait of Hormuz has historically been a flashpoint for geopolitical tensions, given its strategic importance in global energy trade. Previous conflicts in the region have similarly impacted oil prices, underscoring the market's sensitivity to developments in this area.
The near-term outlook for crude oil remains firm, with prices likely to hold above $90 per barrel. A decisive breakout above $100 could trigger further upside momentum, while a sustained drop below $85 may weaken bullish sentiment.
