Market Briefing

  • ICICI Bank's Q1 performance stands out with a 16% profit increase, while HDFC, Axis, Kotak, and Yes Bank shares drop after mixed earnings.
  • Analysts favor ICICI for its strong metrics and execution.

Shares of major Indian private banks, including HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and Yes Bank, fell by 2-5% on Monday following their June quarter earnings reports, which failed to meet market expectations. In contrast, ICICI Bank shares rose over 1% after reporting a strong 16% year-on-year increase in standalone net profit to Rs 14,805 crore for Q1 FY27.

HDFC Bank, India's largest private lender, reported a 5% year-on-year rise in net profit to Rs 19,060 crore, with net interest income (NII) increasing by 7% to Rs 33,534 crore. Axis Bank saw a 23% rise in net profit and an 8% increase in NII, while Kotak Mahindra Bank's net profit climbed 26% and NII grew 9%. Yes Bank reported a significant 34% surge in net profit and an 18% increase in NII.

Analysts have expressed a preference for ICICI Bank due to its strong performance across all metrics, including profitability, asset quality, and growth. Vaqarjaved Khan, Senior Fundamental Analyst at Angel One, highlighted ICICI Bank's sustained execution and advised investors to avoid Yes Bank shares due to its weak fundamentals.

ICICI Bank posted the cleanest result in the private banking space this quarter.

Dnyanada Vaidya, Research Analyst at Axis Direct, noted ICICI Bank's ability to consistently outperform peers, reinforcing its premium valuation. Analysts also recommend Kotak Mahindra Bank for its consistent return on assets and potential for margin improvement, while advising caution regarding its leadership transition.

HDFC Bank's performance was deemed in-line, but its net interest margin was disappointing. Analysts see potential for gradual margin improvement but note that a meaningful re-rating depends on sustained core NIM improvement and clarity on leadership.

The bank has consistently demonstrated its ability to outperform peers even during periods of heightened uncertainty.
