Indian bond yields remained stable on Monday as expectations for a rate hike by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) strengthened. The benchmark 6.94% 2036 bond yield was at 7.0516% at 10:30 a.m. IST, slightly up from the previous session's close of 7.0497%.

Sagarmala Finance Corporation is set to launch its first blue bond issuance on September 28, aiming to raise six billion rupees for maritime sector projects. These funds will support port development and coastal road networks, with SBI Capital Markets arranging the issue. The bond is rated AA+ by Icra and Care, and investors will submit coupon and commitment bids on Monday.

Oil prices eased on Monday, though Brent crude futures edged higher in Asian trade. Investors are closely monitoring developments in the US-Iran conflict ahead of this week's United Nations meeting, which could lead to a diplomatic breakthrough. For India, a major oil importer, sustained high crude prices pose a significant macroeconomic risk, impacting the import bill and current account deficit.

We are not expecting any major trend or pick-up in volume, and the market should move sideways today.

The Reserve Bank of India is expected to consider a rate hike at its next monetary policy meeting on October 7, following a retail inflation increase to 4.82% in August. The US Federal Reserve's recent 25-basis-point rate hike has also contributed to concerns about prolonged tight global monetary conditions.

Liquidity conditions have tightened as the RBI sold 750 billion rupees ($7.83 billion) of bonds through open market operations, with plans to sell another 250 billion rupees of securities on Monday.

Overnight indexed swap rates remained largely unchanged amid shallow trading volumes. The one-year rate ended at 6.07%, and the two-year rate closed at 6.2850%, while the five-year rate was at 6.55%.

Background

India's bond market has been closely watching the RBI's monetary policy decisions as inflationary pressures and global economic conditions evolve. The central bank's actions are crucial in managing liquidity and maintaining economic stability.

Looking ahead, market participants will closely watch the RBI's upcoming monetary policy meeting for any changes in interest rates, as well as further developments in the global oil market and geopolitical tensions.
