JioBlackRock CIO Rishi Kohli anticipates continued volatility in the Indian stock market, with the Nifty index facing challenges from global macroeconomic factors and rising bond yields. Despite a better-than-expected earnings season, the market's recovery remains uncertain as domestic yields surpass 7% and global economic pressures persist.
Kohli notes that the recent oil price spike and rising bond yields have caused the market to retreat, despite improved earnings compared to last year. He highlights the influence of global macroeconomic conditions on local markets, with domestic yields now at 7.15% and potentially rising further. The Reserve Bank of India's measures to support the currency have introduced excess liquidity, adding to market uncertainty.
While Kohli expects oil prices to stabilize eventually, he points out that bond yields are in an upswing, complicating the market outlook. Historical data suggests that gradual increases in yields have not always negatively impacted markets, but sudden spikes could cause volatility. Concerns about yields reaching 5% are largely due to their prolonged absence at such levels.
“If banks and a few other heavyweights start performing, the broader indices should do well.”

Kohli also addresses the challenges facing the IT sector, particularly with AI companies' valuations rising and growth slowing for large-cap IT firms. He anticipates more dispersion in valuations as the sector adapts to changing dynamics over the medium term. Kohli's funds, such as FlexiCap and Sector Rotation, maintain a systematic approach to managing risk and returns.
In the Sector Rotation fund, pharma and banks have been the largest overweight sectors, while IT remains underweight. Kohli emphasizes the importance of consistency in fund performance, aiming for steady returns with lower volatility to benefit retail investors.
Background
The Indian stock market has been experiencing volatility due to global economic pressures, including rising bond yields and fluctuating oil prices. The Reserve Bank of India's recent measures to stabilize the currency have added excess liquidity to the market, contributing to uncertainty. Investors are closely watching these developments to gauge the market's future direction.
Looking ahead, Kohli suggests that investors should prepare for continued market fluctuations, driven by global economic factors and sector-specific challenges. Monitoring bond yields and geopolitical developments will be crucial for assessing the market's trajectory.
