Market Briefing

  • Eli Lilly's retatrutide trials have shown promising results, particularly with a 4 mg dose achieving 19% weight loss, comparable to leading therapies.
  • This positions Lilly to potentially extend its leadership in the obesity market.

Eli Lilly's shares have risen following the presentation of promising data from two retatrutide trials at the American Diabetes Association meeting in New Orleans. The trials, focusing on treatment-naive type 2 diabetes patients and those with obesity, showcased the efficacy of a 4 mg dose of retatrutide, which achieved approximately 19% weight loss, comparable to the highest dose of Zepbound, a current blockbuster therapy.

Investors were particularly encouraged by the tolerability of the 4 mg dose, which showed similar rates of treatment discontinuation and low levels of vomiting. However, side effects were noted to increase at higher doses. Analysts from Citi highlighted the compelling efficacy data, suggesting that retatrutide could be positioned as a first-line treatment for patients who have exhausted the efficacy of Lilly's tirzepatide.

The obesity market is witnessing increasing competition among drugmakers who are focusing on balancing strong results with fewer side effects to encourage wider adoption. Lilly's shares have gained 9% this year, contrasting with a 17% decline for its closest rival, Novo Nordisk. Analysts suggest that retatrutide could emerge as a strong competitor for Novo starting next year.

The 4mg dose efficacy data for retatrutide are compelling enough that first-line positioning cannot be dismissed.

J.P. Morgan analyst Chris Schott noted that Lilly is poised to further raise the standard of care in the obesity space, potentially extending its leadership in the $200 billion-plus incretin/obesity market. Lilly also presented data on other candidates, including an approved weight-loss pill and another experimental injectable, eloralintide.

RBC Capital Markets analyst Trung Huynh emphasized the depth of Lilly's obesity portfolio, highlighting its leadership and growing gap with competitors.

LLY has the pieces in place to further raise the standard of care in the obesity space, and we see the company if anything further extending its leadership position in the $200bn+ incretin/obesity market longer term.
