NMDC has announced its ambitious plan to achieve net-zero operational emissions by 2047, a move that has seen its shares rise by 2%. The company is committed to reducing its carbon footprint and transitioning towards lower-carbon mining practices through a structured roadmap divided into three phases, starting from FY 2026.
According to a filing with the exchange, NMDC has identified six key strategies to achieve its net-zero target. These include energy efficiency, renewable energy integration, fleet electrification, low-carbon fuel adoption, Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS), and demand-side management. The roadmap is divided into short-term (FY 2026-FY 2030), medium-term (FY 2030-FY 2040), and long-term (FY 2040-FY 2047) phases.
In the initial phase, NMDC will focus on energy efficiency, renewable energy adoption, and fleet electrification. Subsequent phases will see the implementation of deeper decarbonisation measures and emerging technologies. The company aims to reduce operational emissions by at least 90%, with remaining emissions addressed through offsetting measures.
Beyond Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, NMDC's logistics infrastructure will also contribute to decarbonisation. The upcoming slurry pipeline project is expected to offer a greener transportation solution, reducing reliance on conventional methods. Additionally, NMDC plans to increase iron ore movement via rail freight, supported by infrastructure developments around its operations.
NMDC has already made strides in renewable energy, with a 10.5 MW wind energy facility at Chitradurga and solar power installations across its projects. These initiatives are part of its broader strategy to reduce dependence on conventional energy sources.
NMDC's share price has seen fluctuations, falling 5% in the last month and down nearly 4.09% this year. However, the stock has gained 4.85% over the past year, 67.24% in the last three years, and 74.32% over five years.
Background
NMDC's commitment to achieving net-zero emissions aligns with global trends towards sustainability and reducing carbon footprints. The company's efforts to integrate renewable energy and improve logistics infrastructure reflect broader industry shifts aimed at minimizing environmental impact.
As NMDC progresses with its net-zero roadmap, stakeholders will be keenly watching the implementation of its strategies and the impact on its financial performance. The company's commitment to sustainability is expected to influence its market position and investor confidence in the long term.
