Market Briefing

  • Puneet Pal of PGIM India Mutual Fund advises a flexible investment strategy for ₹1 crore in fixed income, focusing on short-term funds to capitalize on potential yield increases.
  • He emphasizes the importance of aligning investments with risk appetite and highlights the benefits of bond funds over individual bonds.

Puneet Pal, Head of Fixed Income at PGIM India Mutual Fund, advises investors to adopt a flexible approach in the current bond market. With a three-year investment horizon, he suggests allocating ₹1 crore across various fixed-income funds to capitalize on potential yield increases as the rate cycle progresses.

Pal recommends a diversified allocation: 40% in ultra-short-term funds, 20% in money market funds, 20% in liquid funds, and 20% in short-duration funds. This strategy is designed to provide investors with the flexibility to shift into medium- and long-duration funds when yields become more attractive. He emphasizes the importance of aligning investments with one's risk appetite and investment objectives.

In the current economic climate, characterized by geopolitical uncertainties and elevated yields in developed markets, Pal advises against locking into long-duration bonds. Instead, he suggests waiting for potentially higher yields, as the Reserve Bank of India is likely to hike rates due to inflation projections above 5% for the next three quarters.

We are of the view that it’s better to avoid high duration and wait for potentially higher yield levels.

ICICI Bank's recent $750 million five-year dollar bond issuance, priced at 105 basis points over US Treasuries, highlights strong institutional demand. Meanwhile, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Yes Bank are preparing for their international bond issues.

Pal also discusses the advantages of bond funds over individual bonds, citing diversification, liquidity, and professional management as key benefits. He notes that debt mutual funds offer better tax efficiency compared to fixed deposits and direct bond investments, as gains are taxed only upon redemption.

Background

The bond market is currently influenced by geopolitical uncertainties and elevated yields in developed markets. With the Reserve Bank of India expected to hike rates due to inflation projections, investors are advised to remain flexible and consider short-term funds.

Looking ahead, investors should monitor interest rate trends and geopolitical developments, which could impact yield levels. Pal's strategy offers a balanced approach to navigating the evolving fixed-income landscape.
