Market Briefing

  • State Bank of India plans to divest a 1% stake in the National Stock Exchange through its upcoming IPO.
  • This move, involving both SBI and SBI Capital Markets, is part of a broader strategy to optimize holdings.
  • Meanwhile, SBI's mortgage portfolio is expected to reach Rs 10 lakh crore this quarter.

State Bank of India (SBI) is set to participate in the National Stock Exchange (NSE) Initial Public Offering (IPO) by divesting a 0.65% stake, according to Chairman C S Setty. SBI Capital Markets will also divest 0.35%, totaling around 1% for the SBI group.

SBI currently holds a 3.23% stake in NSE, while SBI Capital Markets owns 4.33%. The divestment plan comes as part of the NSE's IPO, although the final percentage may vary depending on other shareholders' participation. Setty clarified that there are no immediate plans for monetizing other subsidiaries.

In a recent development, SBI, along with Amundi, diluted a 10% stake in SBI Mutual Fund, with the public offer being oversubscribed 42 times. Post-listing, SBI's holding in the mutual fund declined to 55.46% from 61.76%, while Amundi's stake reduced to 32.56%.

People trust SBI the most when it comes to taking a home loan... that paperwork is properly done, including the due diligence on the builder.

SBI is also poised to achieve a significant milestone in its mortgage portfolio, expected to cross Rs 10 lakh crore this quarter, driven by strong demand. The bank had surpassed Rs 9 lakh crore in home loans in the previous financial year.

With a 28% market share in the home loan segment, SBI has over 460 home loan processing centers across India. Setty attributes the bank's success in this area to transparency in pricing and customer trust in its processes.

Background

The divestment in NSE is part of a broader trend of strategic stake sales by SBI, which could impact the market dynamics and investor interest in the upcoming IPO.

Looking ahead, the market will be closely watching the NSE IPO's impact on SBI's financials and its strategic moves in the financial sector.
