  • The Fed's decisions on interest rates amid rising inflation concerns and geopolitical tensions will be crucial for market sentiment.

The Indian stock market is poised for a volatile week as investors brace for key developments including the US Federal Reserve meeting, surging oil prices, and major corporate earnings announcements. The Fed's meeting on July 28-29 is anticipated to offer insights into future interest rate policies amid rising inflation concerns driven by escalating oil prices.

The Federal Reserve's upcoming meeting is set against a backdrop of heightened tensions in the Middle East, which have propelled Brent crude prices to $100 a barrel. This surge in oil prices has intensified speculation that the Fed might adopt a more aggressive stance on interest rates to manage inflation, which remains above the 2% target. While the Fed is expected to maintain current interest rates, there is a 38% chance of a 25-basis-point hike, according to LSEG data.

The oil market has been rattled by the ongoing US-Iran conflict, with crude prices jumping 10% this week. The situation worsened as Iran-aligned Houthis attacked Saudi oil tankers, raising fears of disruptions in the Bab el-Mandeb shipping route. Such geopolitical tensions are unsettling investors and contributing to market volatility.

Investors will also be closely monitoring the Q1 results of major companies like Adani Enterprises, Asian Paints, and Tata Power, among others. The management commentary and brokerage reactions will provide crucial insights into the companies' future prospects.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) have been net sellers, offloading Rs 7,180 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) have been net buyers, investing Rs 8,640 crore. The Indian rupee has weakened for the fourth consecutive week, closing near Rs 96.55 against the US dollar, pressured by high crude prices and geopolitical uncertainties.

Background

The market's technical indicators suggest a bearish trend, with the index trading below key moving averages and the daily RSI hovering around 43. Sudeep Shah of SBI Securities notes that the MACD histogram remains below the zero line, indicating continued bearish momentum.

As the market navigates these challenges, the focus will be on the Fed's monetary policy decisions and geopolitical developments. Investors should watch for any surprises from the Fed meeting and monitor oil price movements closely.
