Zee Entertainment shares fell sharply to Rs 86.90 on the NSE on Monday, marking the lowest level since May and the steepest single-day decline in nearly a month. This downturn follows announcements by Canara Bank, Union Bank of India, and LIC Housing Finance to contest the NCLT's approval of a repayment plan by Essel Group founder Subhash Chandra.
The NCLT approved a repayment plan where Subhash Chandra would pay approximately Rs 6.5 crore against creditor claims of Rs 22,006.57 crore, resulting in a 99.97% haircut. This decision has sparked significant debate, although it does not involve corporate borrowings by Essel Group companies or personal borrowing by Chandra of Rs 22,000 crore.
The resolution pertains to Chandra's personal insolvency as a guarantor for debts owed by Essel Group entities. Creditors with around 80.81% voting share supported the plan, while others, including HDFC and LIC Housing Finance, opposed it. Despite this, the plan met the supermajority requirement and was approved by the NCLT.
“Terming it a positive development for the stock, Abneesh Roy, executive director, research at Nuvama Institutional Equities, said it cleared the prolonged fundraise overhang due to the regulatory proceedings.”

Earlier this month, Zee Entertainment raised Rs 660 crore by issuing 20.94 crore fully convertible warrants to Sunbright Mauritius Investments at Rs 126 each. This move was seen as a positive development by Abneesh Roy of Nuvama Institutional Equities, as it alleviated the regulatory overhang on fundraising.
Zee Entertainment shares have declined about 20% in the past month, despite a 2% rise in 2026. Over the past three years, the stock has dropped 65%, and over five years, it has fallen more than 46%.
Background
The NCLT's decision to approve the repayment plan has raised concerns among creditors and market analysts, given the significant haircut involved. The case highlights ongoing challenges in India's insolvency resolution framework, particularly regarding personal guarantees.
Looking ahead, investors will be closely monitoring the legal proceedings and potential impacts on Zee's stock performance. The outcome of the creditors' challenge could significantly influence market sentiment and Zee's financial strategies moving forward.
