Market Briefing

  • The passenger vehicle segment showed strong performance in May, driven by robust demand and new capacity additions.
  • Samvardhana Motherson and Maruti Suzuki are poised for growth, supported by strong order backlogs and demand recovery.
  • However, commercial vehicles face challenges due to geopolitical tensions.

In May, the passenger vehicle (PV) segment emerged as a standout performer, driven by robust retail demand, lean dealer inventories, and new capacity additions. This translated into stronger-than-expected wholesale growth, particularly in utility vehicles and newly launched models.

Meanwhile, the two-wheeler market showed mixed results, with healthy wholesale volumes but softer retail demand.

The commercial vehicle sector faced challenges due to geopolitical tensions in West Asia, which disrupted trade flows and impacted freight activity. Demand softness was particularly evident in the medium and heavy commercial vehicle segments.

Conversely, the tractor industry thrived on resilient rural demand, although rising farm input costs and potential weather disruptions pose risks.

Samvardhana Motherson reported a strong 4QFY26 performance with a 55% YoY rise in adjusted PAT and a 200bp expansion in EBITDA margin to 11%. The company is supported by a USD96 billion booked business pipeline and has raised its 5-year revenue aspiration to USD108 billion.

Maruti Suzuki's growth is driven by demand recovery in small cars and SUVs, with a healthy order backlog of approximately 190,000 vehicles. The company expects a 10% domestic volume growth in FY27, aided by capacity expansion and sustained demand.

Background

The automotive industry is experiencing varied performance across segments, with passenger vehicles and tractors showing strength, while commercial vehicles face external challenges. This highlights the importance of strategic positioning and market adaptability.

Looking ahead, the PV segment is well-positioned for sustained growth, while tractors benefit from favorable rural fundamentals. However, commercial vehicles and two-wheelers may need stronger demand recovery to regain momentum. Rising input costs across segments remain a challenge, emphasizing the need for operational efficiency and pricing discipline.
